What people said
NVC gave me a framework to communicate in a healthier way. This wasn't just something that helped at work, it had an enormous effect on my personal life as well and I credit it to having strong relationships now.
I deescalated a nasty dispute between two people close to me after reading only the first few chapters. I was impressed because I wasn't the type of person to emotionally connect with people so effectively.
But it's been tremendously helpful for me in engaging with people across ideological gaps (chasms these days). And it may have saved my life on occasions when conversations got especially heated
I have very low native empathy, and the techniques in that book have helped me learn to understand and interact better with more emotionally-responsive people.
I could see how important it is to observe the context of any conversation with someone, and to react based on an empathic curiosity of their feelings & needs.
It has definitely changed how I interact with (or see) others (and myself), and I am trying to put more of it in practice; currently on a second reading.
NVC changed my life! It's helped me gracefully navigate little relationship difficulties that could have otherwise ballooned into moments of sabotage.
The techniques I've picked up have helped me build stronger relationships with my spouse, my children, my customers, my employees, and my peers.
Changed how I think about the language we use in everyday communication with other people, and more importantly, the language I use with myself.
I have found this to be a life changing book. I've read it easily a dozen times and listened to the 8 hour audio version almost as many times.
I think it's really helped me understand some of my own communication tendencies and given me a lot of tools to help curb my own shit.
Essentially, this book has been teaching me how to human for the past year. I've read it 5 times and may read it again this week.
The book which helped me the most is *non violent communication*. Its like an universal protocol, but still filter the bullshit.
It helped reinforce the importance of listening and communicating in a way that the other person knows they’ve been listened to.
I benefited more from the mentality that you can communicate the same message in multiple tones and receive different results.
"Non-violent Communication" helped me a lot. It will simplify the issues. It's not about blaming the kid or blaming yourself, but learning ways to shift focus away from blame/judgement to needs.
the techniques in Non Violent Communication changed a particular breakup I went through for the better by making it clearer to me what the other person's feelings were
I feel more in touch with my feelings and more empathetic as a direct result from following what the book is teaching.
I think for me it was about a year of trying before my first successful use of it in a hostile conversation.
That and reading the book Nonviolent Communication changed how I think about and deal with people forever.
This one literally changed who I am as a person and how I show up for others.
This book helped me with empathy, boundaries, and self-criticism.
I think I practice it almost daily for the past years now and I helped me to express a whole set of emotions from anger to doubt to fear and helped me with connecting with others, enabling a better understanding.
